United States vs. Japan in Math and Science Essay -- American Education

Over the years, tests have determined that the United States has not improved in math and science compared to Japan. Both countries have a different approach towards school. This might be the reason why American students are doing so poorly in math and science. American education should be compared to Japanese so that both can learn from each other because even though American scores are down they still have great ways to educate students. Differences that they have are ability vs. effect, teaching techniques, and parenting. In Japanese education, prime factors of their success are viewed as effort instead of ability. In his article, â€Å"Strengths, Weaknesses, and Lessons of Japanese Education,† James Fallows says, â€Å"The Japanese school system acts as though intellectual ability does not matter, assuming that just about everyone has enough ability to succeed†(208). In other words, they must give it there all. Japan does not accept 90% because they aim for 100%. If Japanese students receive a grade of 90%, then they’ll study even harder to be ready for the next test. It’s great that these students put so much effort in their school, but with all their studying, they don’t have anytime to have fun. The down fall is that all their childhood memories are going to be devoted to school and not them having fun. In the United States, education is viewed more towards ability rather than effort. Compared to Japan’s education, all students are taught the same subject at the same pace. In America, students are placed in classes by their individual levels where some will continue on as other will have to take the whole year over. Also, parents too believe that ability takes role in the learning in their children’s education. It is like parents... ...re continuing school knowing that its possible for the answer to be no. There’s not much pressure from parents in the United States for children’s education. Ultimately, in Japanese and in America, education has several gaps that can be fixed by looking at each others weaknesses and strengths. The horrific thing about the Japanese education is that they stress school too much that a thought of having fun is out the window. What United States education can learn from Japan is that students need to be pushed for effort in order for them to succeed. Group work should be involved more in American education since Japan is succeeding from it. The last thing that American’s should adapt from Japanese education is parent involvement. With the help of parents, students are more likely to succeed because they’ll have that extra help and push to achieving their school goals. Halal Food Essay

Hello Ladies and gentlemen, this is our final project for Journalism and Mass Communication senior class video presentation, an interview from the Taipei Grand Mosque Assistant Imam Musa. It presents an interview on what are the differences between halal and non-halal foods? In this interview, we will present to you Halal Food Consumption in Taiwan, What we meant by Halal, where Muslims buy and eat Halal foods. And as well as how Muslims Brothers and Sisters could seeks advice in country they travel to where a handful of Muslims is found. From what the Imam just rightly said, only the celebration of Eids is the time when the Taipei (Taiwan) Govt. allows them to slaughter or sacrifice their animals, only at the Grand Mosque in Taiwan. These memorable days marks the Muslims celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, Muslims commemorate and remember Abraham’s trials, by themselves slaughtering an animal such as a sheep, camel, or goat This action is very often misunderstood by those outside the faith. Allah has given us power over animals and allowed us to eat meat, but only if we pronounce His name (To make our food Halal) at the time of taking life. Muslims slaughter animals in the same way throughout the year. By saying the Name of Allah (Bismillah) at the time of slaughtering, we are reminded in that way that life is sacred. As the majority of Muslims gathered every Friday (to pray Friday Prayers known as Salatul Juma). This is the only time when you can buy halal meat imported from Australia and New Zealand as the imam said. Friday, is a religious festival for the Muslims. In this holy day, the Muslims gather at the mosques at noon time. They listen to the khutbas (Speeches made by the Imam). Then after the prayers, most of the people go to that restaurant to buy that halal meat and halal foods sold at that restaurant only on Friday noon.

The Escape of a Modern Housewife in Kate Chopins The...

The Escape of a Modern Housewife â€Å"She could only realize that she herself – her present self – was in some way different from the other self† (Chopin 67). The Awakening by Kate Chopin is a compelling story of a woman who is awakened from the miserable duties of a housewife and mother to a woman who falls in love and finds herself. This story is not to judge a woman for having an affair with her husband, but it is to make the reader fall in love with this woman named Edna and go with her on her journey of finding herself. Edna is an extraordinary character in The Awakening, and it makes the reader see the basis of independence, and also giving the reader his or her own journey and reflection of their own life throughout the novel. The†¦show more content†¦Robert’s love changed her life and makes it complete, and without him there would be no awakening for her. Life and death are based on this novel, figuratively Edna awakens from her dull, dep endent life to and independent, always changing life. This is an example of the first time Edna awakens from her dull life: â€Å"For the first time she recognized anew the symptoms of infatuation which had felt incipiently as a child, as a girl in her earliest teens, and later as a young woman† (Chopin 75). Literally the novel deals with death when Edna commits suicide and figuratively she’s already dealt with death by being married to her husband before she awakens into a new life. â€Å"She grew daring and reckless, overestimating her strength. She wanted to swim far out, where no woman had swum before† (Chopin 47) is a quote that pertains to an implicit and explicit belief. The quote’s literal context tells you that Edna wanted to swim in the ocean farther than any other woman had ever done, and she became taunted with the idea of doing so. But the figurative context of this quote is that she wanted to escape the duties of being a wife and mother, she no longer wanted to be a modern woman. There was a difference in her thinking than others, and she was determined to find it and be independent no matter what her mental strength was.
